An African chewstick is a natural toothbrush made from a twig of the Salvadora persica tree, also known as the “toothbrush tree” It is traditionally used in Africa, India, and nearby Muslim countries to clean teeth and freshen breath Chew sticks are made by fraying one end of the twig, which can then be used to brush against the teeth, while the other end can be used as a toothpick The earliest chew sticks have been dated to Babylonia in 3500 BCE and an Egyptian tomb from 3000 BCE; they are mentioned in Chinese records dating from 1600 BCE
Chew sticks are available in various flavors such as peppermint and vanilla. They can also be made from other trees such as neem in South India Chew sticks are still used today by traditional Sikhs as it is written in their scriptures.
